Black Striped Wallaby (Macropus dorsalis)

Size: Males to 820mm, Females to 615mm (head and body length)

Tail length: Males to 830mm, Females to 615mm

Weight: Males to 20kg, Females to 8kg

Development: Females sexually mature at 14 months, males at 20 months. Young vacate the pouch by 30 weeks and suckle at foot until weaned.

Natural Habitat: Closed and open forests and woodlands with a thick understorey, including rainforest margins, brigalow scrub and lantana thickets.

Natural Diet: Grasses, herbs and shrubby vegetation.

Natural Behaviour: Nocturnal

Social Behaviour: Live in mobs of 20 animals or more.

Caring Notes:

  • Orphans very rarely come into care
  • Preferable to raise orphans in pairs if others in care
  • Not generally suitable for new macropod carers
  • They remain in care for up to 6 months before going to pre-release where they will remain in care for up to a further 3-4 months.
