Greater Glider (Petauroides volans)

Identification:

Largest of the gliding possums, weighing between 900 and 1700 grams. Colour can vary from cream through to grey and brown to black above, with white under. It has a very fluffy appearance with large ears and a small head. Very long tail which is not prehensile. The gliding membrane runs from the elbow to the ankle.

Habitat:

Eucalypt forests and woodlands

Nest Type:

Tree hollows

 

Biology:

Nocturnal and solitary. Breeds in the second year of life Produces one young which remains in the pouch for about four months, after which it rides on the mother’s back or is left in the nest. The young is independent at about 10 months. As with many other species its survival depends on the preservation of old growth forests.

Natural Diet:

Tips of selected eucalypts, blossoms and buds.

Predators:

Eagles, owls, cats, foxes
