Red Legged Pademelon (Thylogale stigmatica)

Size: Males to 536mm, Females to 520mm (head and body length)

Tail length: Males to 473mm, Females to 445mm

Weight: Males to 6kg, Females to 4kg

Development: Females sexually mature at around 48 weeks and males at 66 weeks. Young vacate the pouch by 28 weeks and suckle at foot for a further 9 to 10 weeks.

Natural Habitat: Rainforests, wet sclerophyll forests and vine scrubs.

Natural Diet: Leves, fruit, ferns, fungi and grasses.

Natural Behaviour: Nocturnal

Social Behaviour: Shy and generally solitary.

Caring Notes:

  • Orphans do not come into care very often
  • Preferable to raise orphans in pairs if others in care
  • Need a very secure yard – they are exploring outside from 400 grams
  • They remain in care for up to 4 months before going to pre-release where they will remain in care for up to a further 2 months.
  • Not suitable for households with children, cats or large number of people.
