Swamp Wallaby (Macropus bicolor)

Other common names: Black Wallaby, Black-tailed Wallaby, Black Pademelon, Stinker

Size: Males to 847mm, Females to 750mm (head and body length)

Tail length: Males to 862mm, Females to 728mm

Weight: Males to 20kg, Females to 15kg

Development: Sexually mature at 15-18 months. Young vacate the pouch at about 36 weeks and suckle at foot until about 15 months old.

Natural Habitat: Rainforests, sclerophyll forests and woodlands with a dense understorey and heathlands.

Natural Diet: Browses on shrubs, pine seedlings, rushes, fungi, vines, ferns and grasses.

Natural Behaviour: Nocturnal

Social Behaviour: Generally solitary.

Caring Notes:

  • Fairly common orphan to come into care in South East Queensland
  • Preferable to raise orphans in pairs but can be raised individually
  • Fairly hardy species
  • Suitable for new macropod carers
  • They remain in care for up to 6 months before going to pre-release where they will remain in care for up to a further 2 months.
  • Special dietary requirements
