Whiptail Wallaby (Macropus parryi)

Other common names: Pretty Faced Wallaby, Grey-faced Wallaby, Grey or Blue Flier

Size: Males to 924mm, Females to 755mm (head and body length)

Tail length: Males to 1045mm, Females to 858mm

Weight: Males to 26kg, Females to 15kg

Development: Females sexually mature at 18-24 months, males at 2-3 years. Young vacate the pouch at about 38 weeks and suckle at foot until 15 months old.

Natural Habitat: Open forest with a grassy understory, often in hilly areas.

Natural Diet: Grasses, herbs and ferns.

Natural Behaviour: Nocturnal

Social Behaviour: Very gregarious and live in mobs of up to 30-50 animals.

Caring Notes:

  • Very uncommon to receive orphans into care
  • Preferable to raise orphans in pairs if possible
  • Preferable to go to a more experienced macropod carer and who has raised Eastern Grey Kangaroos previously
  • They are similar to kangaroos in nature as opposed to other wallaby species
  • They are very nervous animals and suffer easily from stress
  • They remain in care for up to 8 months before going to pre-release where they will remain in care for up to a further 3 months.
  • Not suitable for households with large numbers of people or children.
